Very fine and most rare c1880 Dominick & Haff sterling silver in the Japanesque form cream jug with hand hammered & chased repousse floral and leaf decoration & gold wash interior. Retailed by J.E Caldwell, Philadelphia; by the 1850s, Caldwell ceased to produce their own silver ware. Instead, they devoted themselves entirely to retail. Dominick & Haff was, perhaps its most important supplier. During this period, usually only the Caldwell mark would appear on such items, as illustrated with this Japanesque cream jug. Beautifully designed and hand crafted. Rectangular form, curved corners, thick banded rims top and bottom & the entire cream jug, handle, spout, even the cast ball feet, with hand hammered finish. The work very much in the Japanesque style copied by Dominick & Haff, Tiffany and Gorham in the third quarter 19th century. Retains most of it's original gold wash interior. Measures 5 3/4 inches handle to spout and 3 inches tall. Exceptionally thick, heavy sterling, weighs 9 1/2 ounces. Near pristine condition with only a single pin tip size indent to handle, barely discernible. Hallmarked to base as shown. |
