An amazing 16th - 17th century Italian fragment of silk and metal flowers that were once gold but have aged to a silver darkness, surrounded by red/wine and brown silk velvet. Edged with a 19th century French silver galon with flowers. Backed with red/wine silk velvet, and finished with hand sewn antique silver metal cord. This fabric would have been extremely costly to make even in its time since it would have been woven in layers. It was more than likely woven for a person of importance and wealth as most silk velvets were, add in the gold gilt thread and even by today’s standards this would be a very costly fabric. Added note: To give a reference as to the time this fabric was woven, Rembrandt was alive and painting his most famous painting of all - “Night Watch.” It would be another 200+ years before Vincent van Gogh painted his famous “Sunflowers.” Condition: Some of the metal threads have worn away in spots due to age otherwise in amazing condition.
