1700s Aesops Fable Pillow The Fox And The Grapes

A circa 1700’s French Aubusson tapestry fragment depicting Aesop’s fable story “The Fox and The Grapes”. The story goes, a fox, unable to find a way to reach the grapes hanging high up on a vine, retreated and said: “The grapes are sour anyway!” The moral of the story: It’s easy to despise what you cannot get. The scene is beautifully woven in vibrant colors in silks and wools, fully surrounded with a floral motif. Edged with an 18th century silk and silver metal trim, finished with an antique silver fringe trim from Belgium all on a macadamia colored silk velvet.

Condition: Old restorations as depicted, otherwise wear is consistent with age, fabulous bright colors.
