A great Centennial Bread Plate , The center intaglio portrait bust of George Washington ,is so well executed .The overall plate has a most wonderful design, be sure to look at the handles, they are a hairy paw design with claws & incredible ,very fine diamond point cutting .In the space between the handle & the rim of the plate have impressed 1776 Centennial 1876.Back to the center of the plate ,above George Washington’s Head are the words “First in War First in Peace” At the bottom of the bust “First in the Hearts of his Countrymen“. This plate measures 12” long x 8 ½” wide. This is such an incredible piece of American History & looking at it while writing this description is giving me goose bumps, this is real & genuine made in 1876 for the centennial expo & was made by Gillander & Co. of Philadelphia. Reference to this line of glassware produced for the centennial can be found in the book of Early American Pattern Glass by Alice Hulett Metz on page 113.The condition of this plate is very good ,having only the minor little stresses that one expects from a piece of this age. One medium size flake off of the first edge scallop top right side of the plate, that’s the worst of it, then one or two other tiny flakes, but all in all it’s just great Be sure to browse our entire catalogue on this site for more exceptional antiques,
