18th C English Miniature Portrait By John Barry On Ivory With Hair Art

The sitter has been identified as the Hon. L. Bethune.

He wears a blue coat with gold buttons. A chemise and black stock. His hair is powdered and worn en queue.

Gold frame with plaited hair border. The reverse is glazed to reveal plaited hair work and the remains of the sitters information.

Portrait is approx. 1 1/2 by 1 3/4 inches. Due to construction, I have not examined it outside of its frame.

John Barry painted from 1784-1827. seldom signed his work and often confused with the work of T. Hazelhurst.

He exhibited at the RA and his works are now at the V. & A.M.

Foskett has said that his works have not had the attention they deserve and his work was excellent.
