A late 17th, early 18th century Beauvais tapestry fragment that more than likely came from a border from a larger tapestry. Beauvais, a northern town in France, was established in 1664 and wove tapestries for the wealthy bourgeoisie and nobility of France, as well as for export. This fragment depicts a Grecian clad woman surrounded by a grotesque mask, fish, mirrors and shell. Finely woven in silk and wool threads that still retain their bright color, lightly padded and framed in a newer gilt frame.
Condition: Bright condition but has a dime size area right beside the ladies waist where the silk is worn but still retains the cotton ground. Pieces such as these do get splits between the woven rows, typical, but all have been stitch together again. Area on woman’s right hip has been replaced.
Measurements: 34 x 16
