Beautiful 18th c. Spanish Virgen or Madonna. This is a finely executed cage figure of "La Dolorosa". Her eyes are glass; she retains her original hands in almost perfect condition; she bares her original resplandor (probable) which measures 2 in. in height; there is slight wear to her face (which is to be expected in a figure of this age). Her undergarment and silk dress are completely hand-stitched; the outer "cloak" has both hand and machine stitching and does not appear to be as old as the white undergarment and faded rose silk dress. As can be seen, she has been adorned with silver jewelry (probably 19th c.) I have included detailed photos of the cage construction including the hand-loomed burlap. The height of the Virgen is 16.5 inches, including the resplandor, she measures 18.5 inches. Thank you for visiting.
