18th Century Wood Carved Santo

An 18th century carving of who I believe is St. Francis. From my recollection of seeing pictures of St. Francis his hand was always in this position out stretched usually holding a bird or the birds following him as he walked. Under is other arm he has a bible and peeking out from under his robe at the very bottom is a little animal that looks to me to be a deer. I can tell that originally this carving was fully polychrome – there are some remnants of gold gilding, and some brown on the his monk cloak. This sculpture is chalk full of worm holes – it has tremendous signs of age- he is missing a little bit off of each one of his fingers. His beard as you can see is highly detailed and he has a little bit of lost to his right ear. I believe this sculpture dates some where around 1750 and is just too exciting. He is very solid even with all the worm holes – he is pretty substantial. He stands up very straight – he does not fall over or wobble. This is quite the rarity as far as I’m concerned.
