The Neo-Gothic style is one of the most distinctive forms to follow the neoclassical movement in jewelry. Marking a broad departure from the cleaner, finer lines to heavy gold work and bold Gothic lettering. Up for your consideration is this gentleman’s 19th century English mourning/memorial black enamel band ring. Made from 18 ct gold this ring is incredibly dense and thick. The Gothic lettering “In Memory of” begins to dominate memorial jewelry during the 1830’s and 40’s. A script dedication inside the band reads:
Nicholas Pearce Ob 28 Apl 1830 Et 29
Fully hallmarked with five strikes, leopard’s head, crown with the number 18 beside it for the carat weight, duty mark and the date letter of a capital O which signifies this ring was made between 1829 – 30. In beautiful near mint condition, tiny flakes under the word memory that can be seen only with magnification. I’ve included two extra pictures, last two, to show the difference in the movements from Neoclassicism to Neo-Gothic, noticed the gold thickness.
