Up for your consideration is this impressive Victorian swivel mourning/memorial brooch and/or pendent from England to commemorate the passing of a loved. The face is comprised of painted sepia and dissolved hair on ivory depicting a willow tree hanging over an urn on a plinth. The willow tree represents a symbol of sorrow and mourning, while the urn is the Greek symbol of mourning, the body as a vessel of the soul, originating as a repository for the ashes of the dead in ancient times. This piece has never been used for a loved one so the back is left blank but would hold braided hair. The entire piece is surrounded on the outside with dense, tightly woven hair and farther surrounded with twining gold and ivy leaves which represent memory, immortality, friendship, fidelity, faithfulness, undying affection, eternal life, marriage. The ivy leaves are amazing in their detail. The piece still retains the original C clasp closure and elongated pin stem and also has a ring for using as a pendent. The maker’s name of M.Woods is on the backside in script on a small gold plaque. An unheard of large size for a brooch that can still be used today for braided hair. Condition: Small fine surface scratches around the outside gold on the swivel. Missing the back crystal but easily replace by any fine jeweler.
