Antique European Icon Jesus and Disciples 17"

Antique Eastern European Icon dated to be mid 19th century. Depicting a scene of Jesus teaching, surrounded by his Disciples and is framed with deep red and black with gilt gold decoration. Utilizes two back slats imbedded into the rear of the board for purposes of stability during the drying process and to ensure structural integrity over time. The concept of the icon (from Greek eikon - an image), a consummate representation of a sacred image. Every icon was endowed by believers with a supernatural power which had the mysterious and inexplicable ability to link the soul of a mortal with God. Miracles were expected from icons, which were seen to be invested with divine grace.
