Antique Figural Bronze Bulldog Gorham Foundry Signed

A figural American Bronze Bulldog, signed EE Codman SC with a Gorham Foundry mark. Having excellent detail, the artist certainly knew this breed well. The surface patina is rich & lustrous. Condition: The bronze has very good condition, heavy weight. Measurements: 6 ¾" Long x 5" High x 3 ½" wide.

A short Biography

Edwin E. Codman lived in and around Providence, Rhode Island just after the turn of the century. For many years he was a contract artist with the Gorham Company foundry and modeled sculpture for them to cast in bronze. Many of his works are unsigned by him as he was one of many in house artists hired by Gorham. Being influenced by Barye, Mene, and Moigniez, who were the main sculptors of animals, he created and signed several of his small sculptures that were not done under contract. These were primarily those of dogs and other small animals. Codman was a very competent American sculptor and as he was employed by Gorham he had the resources to turn out extremely fine work.
