This magnificent 3-drawer painted French commode en tombeau or chest of drawers with three drawers, has its original paint and is in the Regence/Louis XV Style. During the period of Louis XV, most solid wood (versus formal marquetry) commodes were made of European oak and walnut, but also examples of fruitwoods, ash and chestnut were to be found. Painted wood was often used as it fostered harmony between furniture and paneling: the moldings and sculpture of either could be painted the same contrasting color. Different from the more formal marquetry commodes of the period, the tops were made of wood, painted or faux marbled, moldings emphasized the shapes of their drawers and aprons , and bronze fittings were only used on key plates and handles.
This French commode has been hand carved in its ornamentation. It has a restrained bow front , faux marble top over conforming body and apron. The front legs terminate in feet known as roquillards (scrolled feet with an acanthus leaves scrolling upwards), while the back legs are block, typical of feet during the 1700’s. The drawer front moldings are elongated s-curves terminating in a scrolls surrounding two raised panels with smaller indents to the inside and larger indents to the outside. The indented portions of the panels have stylized asymmetrical leaves closely resembling the shape of fleur-de-lys. There are two bronze handles per drawer panel with a keyhole in the center. The apron has a central shell with scrolling foliage to either side. The rounded sides are defined by moldings encasing a raised panel with a margent at the top and scrolls at the bottom. The sides are molded center panels.
Antique painted French commodes are difficult to find and this one will grace any room
