Spectacular, highly decorative antique French sterling silver sugar with lid. Made by Veuve Leontine Compere, the decoration is exquisite. Two blank cartouches are embedded in streaming floral foliate fronds, tied with ribbons and bows. The sugar sits on four scrolling floral and foliate feet. The feet, body of the sugar and the lid have strapped panels with hanging bell flowers. The lid has a marvelous foliate berry finial surrounded by palmettos, gently undulating and finely chased. The handles are superb. At the base of each handle is a gorgeous faun's head, crowned with leafy grape vine. The strapped handle has a textured ground with twining ivy and scrolling acanthus. Very ornate, with so many more details. Condition is very good to excellent. I note no flaws apart from the usual light signs of use and lovely antique patina. The bottom has the maker's punch, and both lid and sugar are marked with the Minerve 1st titre; .950 sterling guarantee. Notably, there is not a monogram anywhere on this sugar; it's just waiting to become your heirloom Dimensions: the sugar stands 7" tall, 7" wide and 5" diameter. It weighs a hefty 685 grams, that's 1 pound 8 ounces
