Antique Italian Walnut Cassapanca Cassone Coffer

An Italian Cassapanca richly carved in walnut, c.1860 Piemonte Italy. Cassapanca in Italian means ' House Bench. The name derives from Casa / Cassone or coffer. These are very well carved grandiosely styled antique architectural objects as well as prestigious pieces of furniture. The cassapanca was a design created to perform several functions. It was intended to seat several people, as well as provide storage. The design was introduced in the middle of the 15th century and was considered to be stately and monumental in character. The cassapanca was often used as the seat of honor in houses of the upper classes. Later cassapancas were ornamented with carving and mouldings, such as this one, and sometimes were almost of sarcophagus shape. Incredible for numerous design uses. Excellent Condition.
