Anonymous, 18th Century Colonial School, oil on canvas depicting Madonna holding infant baby Jesus. She is crowned with fine jewels and wears gold with a deep red and orange brocade cape with gown. Surrounded by floating winged angels with twigs which embrace her crown, She is holding infant, baby Jesus to the right and to the left she holds an orb; symbolism of holding the world (in Latin orbis terrarum, the 'circle of countries', hence the word orb).Note the three white lilies atop the orb which for centuries has been associated with the idea of the pure and resurrected soul. She rests on a base with two still life arrangements in red urns, to each side of her. A dramatic and stunning painting of the 18th century Colonial school. The painting measures 41 7/8" H By 32 3/4" W. No frame but will hang beautifully as is. Old label on verso reads " Museum Of Modern Art Of Latin America,Colonial Art Of Peru, October 7, to November 22, 1980, #18" Condition: The painting has been professionally relined. There is minor and insignificant loss to the perimeters of the painting, possibly from previous framing.There is crazing and loss to the bottom edge as well, all consistant with age.
