Redware pottery from the regions of Southeastern Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia have made the utilitarian redware and earthenwares produced in this area highly sought-after specimens for much of the past century. Early collectors of folk art and Americana quickly identified the distinctive works of "Shenandoah". The potter of this redware jug did a very nice job of "balancing the design" and adding such decorative elements as the handles, applied base and the incised, decorative rings. Two incised rings above the bulbous, wider area which line up near the handles. An applied ring forms the base. Bottom inside the base ring bulges outward but not past the applied ring. Glaze covers about 95% of vase, consistent with Redware of this age. Redware is usually fragile but this piece is very heavy. Due to its fragility there is a high demand for such a rare simple utilitarian piece, therefore highly valuable.
Measurements: Ht 8. Widest part of the body measures 6-1/4
