A spectacular Carolina Face Jug of truly gargantuan proportions. As in any great work... it must have a presence that not only transcends its maker, seemingly taking on a life of its own but ellicits a visceral reaction in the viewer. The piece is signed as evidenced in the photographs, however a definitive attribution as to the maker remains illusive, may remain an unknowable mystery. A note on attribution: it is unwise, indeed, even foolhardy to play the name game in judging a great work. Rather it should be judged on its own merit, lacking perhaps in attribution but not in substance or spirit. In this great piece there can be seen in its image a certain iconography, one that has found its collective voice and speaks to all mediocraty.
