Celestial And Terrestrial World Globes C1831

Antiques: Accessories

American celestial and terrestrial globes. They are made by J Wellson & Sons 1831 Albany St. New York. As I said – they are rare and wonderful and sold as a pair. I will start with the celestial globe and try to be as accurate as I can in the description. The stand it carved wood without damage with a nice surface patina. The globe is in fairly good condition – it has some deterioration going on, cracking in the surface of the globe. At the part where the top of the globe is connected to the meridian where the arrow sets in you have a little bit of damage there.

The meridian is just fine all in brass with a heavy tarnish. The horizon band is very good having only one crack emanating from the meridian at December out to the edge. And the same goes for the other side at June. At the very base of meridian attached to the stand the set screw is there and in fine working order. Now for the terrestrial globe: the stand is in every good condition with a slightly darker patina then the other globe. The globe itself needs a lot of restoration. I’m going to try to get enough pictures of the damaged areas so you can make your own assessment. It appears to me that it would be a relatively simple repair for a person who repairs globes. The meridian is fine having a dark patina. The horizon band is also good having only some minor edge chipping. It looks to me like this damage may have occurred to the center globe most likely by weather. The damaged area seems to be contained. The other parts of the globe are in near perfect condition rare enough to have restored and certainly well worth the effort. This pair of globes is priced according to condition – realizing that the buyer will have an investment to make on the restoration.

Measurements: 18" at highest x 16 ½" at widest. The horizontal band is 2 3/8" thick and the globes have a 40" circumference.
