	Unknown Artist (Continental School, 19th Century) The pillars of Hercules is the ancient name given to the promontories that flank the entrance to the straight of Gibraltar. Gibraltar, in Europe and Monte Hacho in Ceuta in Africa. The watercolor is depicting a view from the African side of the pillars. The distance between Africa and Europe from this geographical point is only 15 miles. The composition is a 19th century representation of two travelers seen in the foreground among sand dunes with the water beyond. The horizon is almost entirely taken up with the grand features of the Rock of Gibraltar (450 meters in height) in the distance. A multitude of masted ships occupy the bay. Watercolor on paper, matted and framed under glass. Condition: Very light foxing is noted.
	Measurements: 6-1/4" x 9-1/2" sight size, with framing overall 12-3/4" x 15-3/4".
