| Rare English Lovers Eye Minature on ivory set into s silver gilt padlock and on a plaited hair bracelet. By far the best piece I have ever seen or owned and as the English say...."It is a Proper Lovers Eye" not one cut down from a Miniature portrait. It is a very rare Gentleman's left eye with green iris and eyebrow. Approx. 1/2 inch and beautifully set into a silver-gilt pendant. Hair bracelet is almost a blond and attached by 2 gilt metal clasps. A fabulous piece with so much symbolism. An eye has the advantage of mystery and anonymity. It is said that the Prince of wales(later GeorgeIV) gave a locket with a minature of his right eye to his love Mrs. Maria Fitzherbert. Although they were later parted, it was a love which endured. When he died in 1830 he was found wearing a locket with Mrs. Fitzherberts eye around his neck. The Georgian Symbolism of the padlock meant a lock which could never be broken. A heart locked with love for only one. A wonderful piece and in fabulous condition for close to 200 years old. |
