George II Gilded Mirror Style Of Thomas Johnson
Antiques: Mirrors |
| An Outstanding, Hand Carved Mirror, with Gesso and Gold-leaf finish, in the manner of Thomas Johnson, an English wood carver and furniture maker. He worked in London and is particularly known for bold or extreme use and mixture of rococo, Chinese, and rustic motifs. He was said to be one of the most successful exponents of the rococo style, giving it a vitality not seen in the work of other designers. Among other works, he adapted scenes from Francis Barlow's illustrations of Aesop's Fables. These Mirrors, though mid 20th Century Reproductions, (And No longer being Produced) were carved in the time honored traditions by Master Craftsmen, using period tools and techniques. Old, antiqued Glass is fitted in the Mirrors, lending to the period Appearance. These particular Mirrors are decorated with Trees in Full Relief, with carved Squirrels, Ho-Ho Birds, Shells, Garlands and Roses wrapped around dividing bars, with Water-falls and Dripping icicles. This Listing is for One, though I do have a PAIR, that is a "true" pair, as the faces in the lower apron look left and right on each mirror.
