Gilded Parlor/pier Mirror

Antiques: Mirrors, Hallstands: 19th Rococo French Style With Prova

Circa 1890.  This an absolutely exquisite one of a kind beveled antique French gilded parlor mirror that came out of the historic Golden Parrot Restaurant located within the old Fraser Mansion in Washington DC after it closed.. This mirror may have been original to the building at 1701 20th Street designed by the prominent architectural firm of Hornblower& Marshall Architects around 1890 in the desirable Dupont Circle region of Washington DC. Hornblower & Marshall designed many of the well known buildings in Washington at the time including the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, The George Washington University Law School, The Phillips Collection, The Army Navy Club etc. The building the Golden Parrot was located in what was originally built for George S. Fraser in the Beau Arts style and subsequently sold in 1901 to Joseph Thropp and his wife Miriam Scott-Thropp daughter to the President of the Pennsylvania Railroad and former secretary of war under President Lincoln. The building is now registered with the National Register of Historic Places and since 1995 has been occupied as the Washington DC headquarters for the Founding Church of Scientology. The mirror itself is the original beveled glass set in an elaborately carved Rococo Style frame. The glass is in excellent shape with only minimal de-silvering evident. . The carved leaf work is absolutely gorgeous consisting of a carved floral motif of flowers and or acanthus leafs at the top and extending down the sides. The frame surround itself is an elaborately carved gesso over wood with an applied water gilded 22 KT gold leaf finish. There is some missing gilding and minor damage to the gesso all of which we can easily fix if desired.  It is in such good original condition that we are leaving it up to the buyer to decide on restoration. To all you antique collectors out there be the first in line to bid on a piece of Washington DC history.  Size 84 1/2" tall x 36 1/2" wide.  Price $3,400.
