This winter I was lucky enough to acquire some personal library effects of the Honorable Hannibal Hamlin of Bangor Maine .He was the 15th Vice President of the United States. In office March 4, 1861-March 4, 1865 Under President Abraham Lincoln .he was preceded by John C Breckinridge & Succeeded by Andrew Johnson. He was the 26th Governor of Maine January 8, 1857-Februray 25, 1857. Born August 27, 1809 in Paris Maine Died July 4, 1891 at age 81 in Bangor Maine Democrat & Republican Wife Ellen Vesta Emery Hamlin. So without further ado I’ll get on with the offerings. From the library this wonderful & incredibly magnificent 6 volume set of "Goethe'sWerte"1882 so superb the pictures do no justice to the pure art work of this set. Gold stamped decorative leather spine with 4 raised bands, Cream chocolate & toffee swirls of peacock feathers cover the hard board covers & the same on the 3 end leafs. Apparently no expense was spared on the presentation. Each book contains 2 Bands (vol 1&2) (vol 3&4) (vol5&6) (vol 7&8) (vol 9&10) (vol 11 & 12).In each vol aprox 315 pages. Inscription on the first free front page of Helen W Shute, Gottingen,Aug 21/88.I believe this was a friend of Ellen Hamlin. The condition is exceptional! Jonathan Wolfgang von Goethe 1749-1832.It is difficult to explain the importance of Goethe on the 19th century, in this era. In many respects he was the source or at least the cogent expression of many ideas which would in time become common. Goethe produced volumes of poetry, essays & criticisms, as well as engaging in scientific work. |
