GREAT Antique English Tall Case Grandfather Clock Hulse
Comment:
The greater Manchester area includes the town of Bury where Robert Hulfe plied his trade of clock making. In the middle of the eighteenth century accurate timekeeping became a necessity and numerous skilled clockmakers and watchmakers set up business in Manchester and its neighboring towns. Here is a fine example of his work in a tall clock in a mahogany case. This is a moonroller, a feature that is geared to a 29-1/2 day lunar calendar. The bonnet is topped with a single eagle and ball finial. Parquetry and inlays are featured throughout the bonnet and case. The painted dial has, inside the chapter ring, a seconds dial, a 31 day calendar dial, and the signature of the maker. Reeded, quarter columns anchor either side of the long case door. The case sets upon a square plinth set upon ogee feet. This is an eight-day clock striking the hour on a soft gong.

GRANDFATHER CLOCK / TALL CASE CLOCK / LONGCASE CLOCK
A longcase clock, also known as a tall case clock, grandfather clock or floor clock, is a freestanding, weight-driven, pendulum clock with the pendulum held inside the tower, or waist of the case. Clocks of this style are commonly around 6 - 8 feet tall (the shorter Grandmother clock is usually between 5 - 6 feet tall). Most longcase clocks are striking clocks, which means they sound the time on each hour or fraction of an hour.
The advent of the longcase clock was due to the invention of the anchor escapement mechanism around 1670, which allowed a long pendulum that only needed to swing 4 - 6 degrees to operate, and was much more accurate than the older verge escapement. Until the 1800s, clocks were hand-made by individual craftsmen and were very expenisve. The rich ornamentation of clocks of this period indicates their value as status symbols of the wealthy. Pendulum clocks remained the world standard for accurate timekeeping for 270 years until the invention of the quartz clock in 1927.

Condition:
GOOD
In overall good condition. Antique and vintage items by their very nature are used items and will show signs of normal wear due to age and use. As we define 'good condition' relative to the stated age of the piece, we would expect to see 'character marks' consistent with that age and could include nicks or dings on a piece of furniture, normal separation at joints in wood due to expansion and contraction over time, most locks functioning, most drawers and doors open or slide easily, some original trim may be missing, and there may be one or more splits in the wood due to age and use. If there has been a break in the marble, it has been repaired and the repair may be visible. There may be minor restoration that is visible. Chairs considered 'good condition' may have professional structural repairs but are considered to be structurally sound. These types of repairs may be visible upon close inspection. Upholstered items may show wear consistent with age and use and may need to be reupholstered. EuroLux Antiques makes no representation regarding the comfort or useability for the customer's particular application.

GEORGIAN STYLE
Queen Anne did not have any surviving heirs, despite giving birth eighteen times, and the Stuart line in England ended with her death. Descended from James I of England through Elizabeth Stuart, the head of the Hanover dynasty was crowned George I (1714 - 1727) upon Anne's death in 1714. The period of time from the reign of George I through the succession of reigns, George II (1727 - 1760), George III (1760 - 1820), and George IV (1820 - 1830), is collectively known as the Georgian period.
Mahogany became the primary choice for furniture makers in the Georgian age, although the Queen Anne style remained popular through the reigns of George I and II. The designs of Thomas Chippendale, George Hepplewhite and Thomas Sheraton dominated furniture design in the latter half of the 18th century.

This information, to the best of our knowledge, is accurate at the time of the listing. For clocks that are listed as being in FULL working order (i.e., clock runs, clock strikes (if applicable), clock chimes (if applicable)), we typically test them again for 24-48 hours prior to shipping to confirm the accuracy of those statements. The customer will be contacted prior to shipping if a clock is found not to be fully functional, if so stated in the listing, as defined above. EuroLux Antiques provides a detailed leaflet about the functioning and care of vintage clocks with each clock that is shipped, whether the clock is fully functional or not. On occasion, stress during shipping and changes in the clock's environment can cause the clock to require a 'break in' period once the clock arrives at its destination. We are happy to assist the customer getting a clock to resume functioning, as represented in the listing.
