Superb enameled silver serving spoon. The handle has niello done in Egyptian hieroglyphics. The interior bowl is worked in red guilloche enamel with the center depicting the great Sphinx and Pyramids of Giza. This imperial Russian spoon was possibly a commutation for Sweitzer, an Egyptian archaeologist. Has an 800 silver mark and #5 on the side of the handle. The Egyptians are credited with originating niello decoration, which spread throughout Europe during the Middle Ages.
