Item # MAL-4-131
A sacred Shaman drum called the Kultrun, handcrafted with animal hide cover and native wood and tethered. Natural imperfections and the varied tones of the hide and its paintings makes the drum unique. Condition: The cover is tight but does have a slight wave due to humidity levels and time. The native people heat the drums in front of a fire before using, to achieve maximum sound quality. The tighter the hide, the stronger the sound will be. There are several large old repaired breaks and it is missing a piece (see pictures) These do not hurt the integrity due to the rope bands that stretch the raw hide and keeps it all tightly in place. For centuries, the Mapuche people of Chile have been guided by medicine shamans (usually women) called machi. They invoke the Powers, prophesy, heal, and lead blessing ceremonies. A machi enters sacred space by chanting, drumming on the sacred drum or kultrun. According to the Mapuche belief, the owner of the instrument will remain forever inside the Kultrun, symbolizing her own shamanic power. The Machi's supernatural power is complemented by the sacred Kultrun drum they possess and play during their prayers and religious activities.
