Insects Fabres Book Boxed

Collectibles: Antique Books: Original Presentation Box 1937

Fabre’s Book of Insects retold from Alexander Teixeira De Mattos’ translation of Fabre’s “Souvenirs Entomologiques” by Mrs. Rodolph Stawell Illustrated by E. J. Detmold Tudor Publishing Company New York Sixth Printing (1937) with twelve tipped in tissue garded plates in full color by E. J. Detmold.  The dust jacket reads as follows: For forty years Jean Henri Fabre, the great French scientist whom Darwin called “The Homer of Insects,” struggled valiantly that he might won a laboratory in the open fields- a barren, sun-scorched bit of land, and much beloved by Wasps and Bees. In a style, remarkable for its beauty and simplicity, Fabre explains, with infinite patience and care, the Cricket’s music book; and every child will thrill to the delights of a Locust Hunt. Intricate and fascinating is this new and unexplored world of insects. . . . The Wild Bee who stacks her cells in the winding staircase of an empty snail shell. . . . The slender, graceful Praying Mantis with pale-green coloring and her long gauze wings, cruel and fierce. . . . The Common Wasp who builds his spacious home as skillfully as an architect with years of training. The Tailor-Bee- who scrapes the cobwebby stalk of the yellow-flowered centaury, which she later turns into cotton satchels in which to store her honey and eggs. . . . The Cicada who builds like a railway engineer and whose song was made famous by “The Gables of La Fontaine.” These are only a few of the insects of vividly portrayed in Fabre’s Book of Insects, which is the exceedingly rare thing- a work of science that is also a literary classic. Along with “Arabian Nights” and “Don Quixote” it should be in every library.  The book is in very good condition with the dust jacket and original protective box present.  It is 4to in size (10 ½”h).  The dust jacket is very good with some minute shelf wear to the edges but there are no tears or holes.  The book itself has an apple green buckram cloth binding with gold gilt decor on the front and spine depicting insect pictorials.  There is some slight (minute) scuff marks to the gilt and cover.  The pages are exquisite not to mention the vivid, naturalistic highly detailed tipped in plates.  The box is very good also – strong, sturdy – in remarkable condition!  Striving For ExcellenceIt isn’t brilliance or just getting the breaks,It is consistent attention to & honest respect for the Customer.
