ISABEL CANOVAS Yellow Gold Plated AFRICAN MASK COLLECTION Earrings c. 1985 Two completely different Mask Faces make up the Pair - Very special and Eclectic

Isabel Canovas was born in Paris in 1945. She began her career as accessories designer at Hermes and later to Louis Vuitton. She received accolades from Patrick Vuitton who felt she could help in updating the image of Vuitton in the 70's. Her tenure with Vuitton only asted one year and joined Christian Dior as their Accessory Designer. At the age of 37, she opened her own Collection and shop on the fashionable Avenue Montaigne in Paris. She expanded to Madison Avenue in NY and then on to Madrid. One of her apprentices was Dominique Aurientis, a famous couture jewelery designer in her own right. Canovas' clientele knew that she never discounted or loaned pieces to anyone, no matter who the celebrity was. Her editions for each season were in small amount, so are very scarce, and have become very collectible This marketing strategy helped her customers know that the accessories would NEVER devalue with time. Her design career ended with the closure of her store closing in 1992. She is best known for her Circus and African designs, but dabbled in Shawls, Handbags and an occasional clothing item.

Here is an unusual brooch from her AFRICAN MASK Collection dating about 1985. The face is a broad mask featuring a left Lapis stone with beaded framing in the left of the forehead The beading edges the entire Mask brooch as well plated in heavy yellow gold This is almost a precise match to one of the earrings we are featuring separately. and we love the idea of wearing them together. I cannot find a signature on this - which is not unusual for CANOVAS. The design is unmistakable Pin back measures 1 12" and shows some oxidation. It is very secure with good tension The brooch is 2" x 2" x 12" Ts a variation of one of these earrings and is listed separately. This a marvelous Brooch of Classic Canovas design and is in excellent Vintage condition There is very little wear to the plating. ISABEL CANOVAS rarely comes to the secondary market - and when it does, it usually appears on "1st DIBS"

Measurements: 2" x 2"
