An Italian, second half of 16th century, silk damask bed spread or wall hanging most probably from Lucca. Made from several joined panels of a deep forest green, the pattern, a central floral motif with an ogival network of leaves, flowers and crowns. Edged in a rare 18th century copper metal fringe trim, backed in a copper silk taffeta. (For a similar fabric in a different color way, please see MAL -TX01N) A little history: The Renaissance (French for "rebirth"), was a cultural movement that spanned roughly the 14th through the 17th century, beginning in Italy in the late Middle Ages and later spreading to the rest of Europe. This “rebirth” is why you’ll see so much ornamentation using plant life and flowers, symbols for rebirth. Condition: This hanging is comprised of many pieces, quite common since this fabric more than likely came from a dress. Five 1” dark spots that I’ve chosen to leave alone. Otherwise in excellent condition for being 400 years old. (Please note there is no discoloration, any discoloration in the pictures comes from the flash on the camera as silk absorbs light differently at angles.) |
