Italian Antique Oil Painting Gilt Frame Virgin Mary

Early 19th century German Oil On Canvas depicting the Sorrowful Madonna expressing medieval piety with sensitive observation of the natural world to create new, a movingly human devotional image. By focusing on the head and hands of the Virgin against a simple black background, the artist gave the painting the detached and timeless quality of an icon, yet sensitively portrayed the Virgin's humanity; her eyes brimming over with sorrow and tears as she contemplates her son's suffering with a tender, absorbed gaze. No signature found and writing on verso as shown below. Condition: The painting has not been cleaned, the painting has been relined and crazing is noted. Frame is a period gilt wood and ornate frame, contemporary with the art and has a minor split in the wood atop.
