	Italian School Baroque Religious Oil On Copper Painting Fine Art: Fine Art & Miniatures
	Italian or Spanish School, 17th century Baroque oil on copper. A fine painting filled with enormous religious symbolism. The foreground depicts a fainted Dominican friar and by his side is a dog holding what appears to be a small scabbard. One of the figures holds the fainted monk while an approaching Putti offers a vial, in the center of the painting another crowned figure holds a knife. On the left side of the composition another figure (possibly Mary) appears to be breast feeding, with exposed breast, the fainted Monk from a distance. The back round depicts hovering putti's & angels in clouded skies. Of note is the one Putti holding what appears to be a bouquet of roses in his hands. Circa 1650sThe painting brings to memory the famous story in the Greek or Roman classics in which a a philosopher was condemned to death by starvation and was breast fed by a woman. No signature found. The frame is an Italian Baroque, carved gilt wood frame, 18th century (or earlier).Size: approx. 9-1/4" x 7-1/8", with frame 13-3/4" x 12-1/4"Condition: The painting has a nice aged patina and normal oxidation for the period, appears to have been cleaned and restored, some scuffs on perimeter from the frame. Frame has wear and a few losses.
