A French or Italian circa 1700 silk bizarre/brocade with a ground of a forest green with a fantasy floral design in silver metal thread, outlined in yellow and coral silk threads. Edged with a rare 18th century silk and metal thread coral colored fringe trim with scalloped edge, back with silver/gray silk velvet.
During the period of time that “bizarre” fabrics were produced France was the undisputed leader of fashion. Unfortunately due to Louis XIV’s wars unemployment and religious persecution drove many of the weavers into exile to other countries for work. This is why “bizarre” patterns are indifferently classified as French or Italian since it’s virtually impossible to tell which country produced them. Condition: Excellent condition, minor wear/rub to fringe trim.
Measurements: 19 3/4 x 20
