MAASAI "SHUKAS" Black Cashmere & Silk Hand Woven Shawl Adorned with the classic Maasai Beadwork and Kenya Crested Guinea Fowl Red ombre'ed to White Feathers. This was purchased at Henry Beguelin shop in Aspen and is brand new in its original handmade Red Velvet Bag.
The Shawl came with two letters on the Henry Beguelin letterhead. One describes the shawl and the other the care for the shawl. Here is the Description letter written by Anna Trzebinski
"This shawl is hand woven in Nepal using only the finest cashmere and silk. The beadwork is hand crafted by Maasai women from the Great Rift Valley just beyond the Ngong Hills in Kenya. Each shawl is unique and original. The Maasai designs you see are all based on the traditional adornment of the Maasai people. One range of shawls is inspired by a number of wild birds such as Kenya Crested and Vulturine Guineafowl, Yellow-Necked Spurfowl, Greater Flamingo, Lilac Breasted Roller, Sandgrouse and Ostrich. All feathers used are indigenous and are either farmed or obtained under license from the Kenya Wildlife Service. I am currently working on an East-African "coral reef" collection for summer. Future collections inspired by Kenyan flowers and buterflies are in the pipline. All beads, metals, ostrich and cowrie shells etc are from authentic sources from East-Africa. In ing this item you are supporting a local Maasai Women's Group in Kenya, We very much hope you enjoy wearing it as much as loved creating it"
This Cashmere & Silk Black Shawl is 88" x 40" and features lozenge black Beading on two edges. Suspended from the beading are Kenya Crested Guinea Fowl Red ombre'ed to White Feathers. The trim is about 3" long on each side which is included in the measurements. This is packaged in a Ruby Velvet Envelope bag that fastens with Velcro and a beaded Maasai Adornment on the outside of the flap. This is quite special.
Woven by the best artisans of Kashmir with their painstaking tolerance, these shawls are a true representation of Indian heritage & Kashmir's rich workmanship. The shawl is exquisite and elaborate, and the creative embroidery is very detailed. One of the last photos which is wider rather than tall, shows a back view of the hand stitchery so that you can see the complexity of the craftsmanship and amazing dexterity of the embroiderers.
This shawl is hand woven with a slight fringe on two ends The Hand Embroidered Paisley pattern edges the shawl and has two sizeable insets that measure 37 1/2" x 10 1/2" each the border on each long side is about 1" deep The main colofr is a taupey oatmeal and you can clearly see the warp and weft of the weave. The embroidery is an elaborate Paisley in shades or Orange, Purple, Black and Toast. Because of the subtlety of coloration you can see that this was made with the modern sophisticated woman in mind. Total dimensions are 76" x 39 1/2" This was purchased by me on a trip about 10 years ago, and has never been taken out of the drawer. It still has the original folds. I have a collection of the Antique ones - and while travelling this was too special to resist. It is criminal not to utilize this magnificent piece of art and appreciate its subtle splendor. This is a very special one-of-a-kind item with lots of fashion flair
