Micro Mosaic Hen Chicks Brooch, 1840

Figural micromosaics are so much harder to find and this is one of the best. A mother hen is surrounded by her 5 new born chicks. The micro mosaic is set in onyx and surrounded by a gold pin brooch. Though purchased as 14 K gold ...the brooch is not marked nor have I had it tested.

The colors are white, green, yellow and brown. The chicks are nestled around their mother in the folds of her feathers, in the feed bowl and on top of her. The tesserae are of the tiniest and the surface is quite smooth. A real indicator of the age and the quality of the piece.

No missing tesserae and no chips or cracks to the onyx.
