Pair of Decorative Shields from St. Remy, Provence
Shields used in battle have a long history, dating back to the Bronze Age. They came in all shapes and sizes and were used by Persians, Romans, and Egyptians, amongst many others. Each different type of shield had a specific purpose. Some were affixed to a soldiers left hand while others were attached with loops around the fighters neck. Certain shields were made specifically for archers, while others were designed for foot soldiers or mounted soldiers.
The shields of the 11th to 15th centuries were not only used for defense but to also display the coat of arms and the wealth of the owner. For much of the history of edged weapons the shield marched hand-in-hand with the sword in terms of prestige and importance. It is an object worthy of intense study.
In the 1800's, decorative shields became quite popular, allowing a family to display their own coat of arms. Some of these were of very high quality. The set you see before you, was found in a private home in St. Remy Provence. The two shields adorned each side of a fireplace. These were made of cast iron in the 1800's. Each has a handle for hanging.
