| This pair of Silver Candelabrum are Portuguese, and date from the 1820,s. The detail is very crisp; no wear to speak of. These Candelabrum are cast silver. The base, the shaft, and the capital are saturated with chain banding. The banding motifs are of bead lines, roses, akroter, and bright cut engraved acanthus leaves. They terminate with ball and claw feet. They are very sophisticated in form ( Please remember the Portuguese Queen Catherine of Braganza 1638-1705; Married King Charles 2nd. She introduced tea drinking to England). The shafts being partly of hyperboloid form add to the architectonic form, They carry both greek influence, as well as gothic tracery. Condition report: excellent! PS - Candela is Latin for candle; Thus Candelabrum, not Candlestick. |
