This is a simply amazing and exquisite work of art! Carved in Japan prior to 1890, there are three monkeys seated at the bottom of a tall standing lantern. On the top of the lantern, three birds flutter. Ivy trails gracefully down the lantern, all carved in spectacular detail. The ivory has been dyed for effect, entirely in browns except for one section at back of green foliage. The piece is signed on the ivory plinth. While I do not specialize in Japanese art, I have been informed that the 'go', or signature, is that of Mingyoku. Mingyoku is referenced in books on okimonos, and he is described as working in ivory and "early" (as in 18th century early!) I do know that this is a piece of exceptional quality! And, that the quality itself would seem to indicate a very early date for the piece. You collectors will know better than I how rare and wonderful this piece is. Condition: Excellent. One wing tip is lost from the bird perched on top of the lantern. There is a tiny section at the bottom that is loose. Otherwise, I think any 'defects', such as irregularities on the lantern top, are part of the original sculpture, reflecting irregularities in the ivory itself or the imperfection of the human hand. |
