A wonderful Sailors Valentine. This is a super nice one .Housed in the octagonal double case; the colors are very pretty & rich. The work is in good condition for a valentine of this age. The base paper is still vivid & the shells still retain a great luster & texture. There are a few shells missing & the glass frame is also missing - you should be able to see this in the close-up photos, not bad considering the age & rarity of such an example. The case is a bit dry, just the way it should be. I happened to come across an exciting bit of information about the history of sailor’s valentines on the virtual museum site & I’m including it here for you.“Sailors Valentines are a shell art form developed in the early 19th century .these glass covered shadow boxes always octagonal, served as frames for symmetrical compositions of tiny sea shells. The enterprising craftswomen of Barbados & other Caribbean ports who made them often included romantic phrases such as Forget Me Not & Remember Me. The women displayed they’re Valentines on the docks to sell to the New England Whalers as they embarked for the trip home. Many a sailors’ wife or sweetheart waited for months for her beloved & her reminders were the treasures he would carry back from far away ports. In the late 19thh Century, when Caribbean islands ceased to be ports of call for hundreds of whaling ships seeking supplies, this shell art form disappeared. This beauty is titled “To My Mother“. Dating from the 1850’s.The case measures 9” x9” x 2 ½”.This piece in my opinion presents a great investment opportunity.Striving For ExcellenceIt isn’t brilliance or just getting the breaks,It is consistent attention to & honest respect for the Customer. Our World Wide Shipping is Exceptional; Furniture & Chandeliers are transported by Small Independent Carriers for a More Personal Delivery, From Maine to Florida Every 6 to8 Weeks, It Is Very Reasonable, and Ask Me about It Very Flexible Lay A Way Plan Always AvailableBlue Dolphin Fine Antiques from Maine
