Set Of Six Carved Renaissance Dining Chairs

Circa 1875. Extraordinary set of six walnut, Renaissance Revival side chairs. Beautifully proportioned, heavily carved and ornate but not over powering or heavy. Each elegant dining chair features a sea shell crest flanked by winged sea horses joined by a Rococo style urn filled with fruit. The back rail is a central shield flanked on each side by a carved flourish. On each side of the flourish is an open-mouthed carved animal head. The sides of the long upholstered backs feature a bold and detailed carving of a bare-breasted women wearing an ethnic style, draped skirt. The base of the chairs are a simple design with fine turned front legs.  The rear legs are simple and curve back slightly.  Cleaned and re-polished.  Old repairs and re-gluing that do not detract. Freshly re-upholstered in a fine neutral Damask.  Very comfortable, well padded seats and back.  Over-all very good condition.  48" tall x 19"wide x 17 1/2" deep with a seat height of 20" .  Price $4500 for the set of six.
