Circa 1840. Rare large, quality, 19th American Classical cylinder desk, signed J. and J.W. Meeks one of the 19th century's finest cabinet makers. The address on the stamp dates this piece between 1836-1855. The Classical style puts it at the beginning of this period. This wonderfully preserved desk has all the fine detail one would expect from one of New York's most prominent makers. Expertly matched crotch mahogany veneers, maple secondary woods and hidden storage. The desk surface slides out for use and the red writing surface slants. The cubby holes and the lower compartment shelf both have fine, scalloped edges. The lower doors are backed in in a lovely contrasting maple. The desk sits on graceful and well proportioned bracket feet. Maker’s stamp on the inside of the third interior drawer. Original intact locks are found beneath the cylinder roll and on the right door. Beautiful patina, some old repairs and restorations, lightly re-polished. Measures 47 1/8” in height, 51” in width, and 24” in depth.
