This Oil on Panel, "Vaches Dans un Paysage", George Bernier (Belgian, 1862-1918) is in Excellent Condition. Georges Bernier is known for his delightful paintings of domestic animals in their natural environments. Bernier moved to Brussels as a young student and studied first in the studio of Van Alphen in 1880 and later at the Academie des Beaux Arts. He was so fascinated with figurative painting that he entered veterinarian school to learn the anatomy of animals, especially horses. Bernier has painted a number of Belgian landscape paintings with both cattle and horses. His works are included in museum collections in Bruges and Brussels. In this Belgian landscape, Bernier has applied a bright palette to convey the warmth of the midday sun. Four cows graze in a pasture in the middleground, with one horse resting. The portability of this small painting on board suggests that Bernier may have painted this landscape en plein air, a technique made popular by the French Barbizon artists at the beginning of the 19th century and perpetuated by the French and Belgian Impressionists in the late 19th century. Bernier used broad brushstrokes to give a general impression of the landscape. Measuring 10 x 14", Signature Lower Left, Serious Inquiries are Welcome
