Amazing Spode set of 6 matching cups and saucers circa 1810. Cobalt blue borders rimmed, edged and decorated with exquisite intricate gilding. The white ground elaborately hand painted with floral and foliate bouquets encircling a splendid gilt floral cartouche with trailing rocailles. The outer sides of the cups are decorated with gilt work that compliments and carries forward the decoration on the cobalt bands. The handles are heavily coated with gold, and there is a fine gold band on the circular foot of each cup. Condition is very good. One saucer has some wear to the enamel and one cup has a small chip on a rim. Else only very minor signs of use and some faint crazing. Pretty amazing given the 200 years these cups and saucers have graced the Western World. Early Spode porcelain was not marked chiefly because the company was commissioned to make very large sets and only a few of the pieces were marked. These cups and saucers are gorgeous, clearly lovingly preserved across the centuries, and ready for a new proud owner of what is likely a museum quality set. Please see photos for dimensions. Also, one of the pieces bears a typed label of identification, another a Marshall Field label c1810. I've seen typed labels of this nature only on collector's pieces and museum sets.
