Whaling & Fishing By Chas Nordhoff Book

Here is a wonderful book entitled Whaling & Fishing by Chas Nordhoff - author of Man of War Life the Merchant Vessel with illustration by William H. Walker.  Copyright 1895 – Dodd, Mead & Company.  This is a small size book measuring 3 3/8”l x 4 1/2”w.  Red cloth boards in a classical design and overall the condition is quite spectacular.  The binding is tight and of course the pages have just a tiny bit of browning.  The preface starts out like this “with this volume my story of life at sea is complete.  I have endeavored to give a strictly faithful account of the various phases of a sailors existents.  I have borne in mind the usually objection to books of this class; that they are likely to inspire youth with an uneasy longing for a wandering, worthless mode of life.  And as my little books were likely to interest young men and boys, my aim has been to give a plain common sense picture of that about which a false romance throws many charms.  If anything I have written on this subject shall induce a young man, launching into life, to make a sensible choice of evils, by looking elsewhere than to the Sea for the adventure existence which his spirit requires, I shall be rewarded.”  So here you have an interesting true life account of life at sea.  I would suspect that there were not many copies of this book produced.
