Primitive wrought iron Spiral Candlestick of Colonial New England. A high quality example of the classic candlestick in wonderful form and shape. At its upper end, the spiral terminates in a hook-like tail which served as a carrying handle as well as a projection to suspend it from a wall hook, shelf edge or chair back. The lower end of the spiral forms a "tang" which penetrates through the base and is hammer bent, securing the spiral and base together. The wooden base is exemplary, no cracks and a beautifully aged patina. Similar rare examples may be seen in Neumann's Early American Antique Country Furnishings, 1984, pg.71 and Caspall's Fire and Light, 1987, pg.159. They are dated in the 18th century, generally between 1720 and 1780. This SUPERIOR example of a much sought after, but quite scarce, spiral candlesick will be a striking display in any colonial room setting It will also be a highlight in any advanced collection of wrought and forged iron, treenware, lamps and lighting, primitives, folk art or the finest antiques
